DIU Campus Cleaning Day

Students and Career Development Center (CDC) of Daffodil International University (DIU) launched the Campus Cleaning Festival, Summer 2010 for the first time ever on 10 August 2010. The program was inaugurated at 10.30 am at DIU Auditorium by Honorable Vice Chancellor of DIU, Professor Dr. Aminul Islam. Among others, all the faculty members including the students embellished the occasion.

The idea was initially generated by Mr. Md. Sabur Khan, the Chairman, BoG. DIU authority implemented it successfully. The main motto of observing such an innovative program was to capitalize the main resource of the university to maintain the cleanliness; here by ‘main resource’ the students are meant. DIU initially decided to reserve a day or certain time of a day when the students will have to participate in cleaning their campuses. The staff who clean the university will help the students too.

DIU believes, this kind of cleaning activities might help making the students aware & conscious of the cleanliness of the university as well as the surroundings. As the students will be participating in the cleaning process they will avoid making the campus dirty again.

After the inauguration program, activities like Cleaning Prince Plaza Campus, Main Campus & Administrative Building from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm took place. White T-shirt clad Students of various departments guided by faculty members with leadership quality, like Syed Mizanur Rahman, Masud Ibn Rahman, Dr. Binoy Barman visited the campuses and made necessary clean up with brooms & bins. Students vowed to craft a habit of not making the surroundings dirty so that, it would be easy to make the environment clean.

DIU Capital Market Education Program

On the 7th August 2010, Saturday, a workshop on “Capital Market Education Program” took place at the DIU Auditorium. Target audience was the business students of DIU.

Convener of the workshop, Ms. Tanzina Hossain, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Business Administration under the Faculty of Business & Economics of the university presented the real view of capital market and disclosed some real experience. Mr. Saiful Islam, Assistant director of Security & Exchange Commission (SEC), said the real field of Capital market.

This program, organized by Career development Center (CDC), aimed at mixing the theoretical knowledge with practical aspects of capital market. Attended participants of the program were privileged of having more effective and much needed knowledge and information thoroughly and elaborately on capital market affairs for making a wise investment decision as well as availing career building prospect in the field of Capital Market.

The inaugural event was named as: A day long workshop on “Capital market ABC & Personal Investment by Trading Affairs Learning (CAPITAL)”

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP:

•   Educating students of business as an investor by providing the necessary information and knowledge related to the activities of trading operation in Capital    Market

•   Providing a preliminary training to develop themselves as a professional in Capital market.

•   Aiding to mitigate the risk arising from lack of practical investment knowledge.

•   Helping participants to be aware of bookish as well as practical trading affairs.

DIU 2nd Business Festival 2010

DIU 2nd Business Festival-2010 was held from 1-3 July at Daffodil International University auditorium. It was jointly organised by Daffodil International University Business & Education Club (DIUBEC) and Career Development Center (CDC).

The three-day Business Festival included young entrepreneurs fair, business case competition, quiz competition, meet the leaders (Topic: Career Plan), workshop on “E”, seminar on “ Development of Capital Market in Bangladesh” essay competition, business drama conducted by DIUBEC, business movies for students, opening and closing and the award giving ceremony.

“Meet the Leaders” session was arranged where Dr. Ahmed Al Kabir, Chairman, Rupali Bank Ltd. was present as the Chief Guest. Presided over by Professor M. Shahjahan Mina, Advisor, Faculty of Business and Economics and moderated by Mostafizur Rahaman, Business Development Manager in Australian Trade Commission, the function was also addressed among others by Professor Salauddin Ahmed Khan, Former CEO, Dhaka Stock Exchange, Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, Former Chairman, NBR, Mohammad Lakiot Ullah and M. Hamid, a renowned cultural personality.

Prof. Dr. Khondoker Bazlul Haque, Chairman Rupali Bank Ltd. was present in the closing and award giving ceremony as the chief guest while Md. Motiur Rahman, Managing Director, Jamuna Bank Ltd. as the special guest. To meet the growing demand of skilled, and educated manpower in the fast growing real estate sector in Bangladesh, the Department of Real Estate, Daffodil International University (DIU) have started its journey from Summer Semester, 2008. Bachelor of Real Estate (BRE) program, under the Faculty of Business & Economics is spread over 04 (four) academic years (levels) and 12 (twelve) semesters. The department is taking initiatives to innovate new steps to making the department more and more flourished. It is looking for more and more practical/industrial/company attachment for the betterment of our students. The students of the Department invented and demonstrated a splendid business plan on “Floating Restaurant Made by Ferro-Cement”, in the DIU 2nd Business festival2010, organized by and held in DIU campus. With the assistance of the teachers, students are working to innovate and develop new plans to alleviate the risks and to maximize the opportunities of housing sector. The effectiveness of MBA Major in Real Estate from the Summer 2010 is a successful leap for the whole university. Department of real Estate is really happy that it has successfully initiated the MBA degree in Real Estate. Anime Culture

Anime which is an abbreviated pronunciation in Japanese of Animation. For rest of the world it is known as Japanese animation.

Anime has become so popular through out the world that only anime is bringing the whole Japan to every part of the world. So to say Japan has created a culture that is rising its head above all, a culture named Anime Culture.

Anime is getting so popular recently that many of the other countries are now starting to produce their own anime (animation following the rules of Japanese animation). Many countries along with Japan also arrange Cosplay competition where people dress up as their favorite anime characters.

There are differences between cartoon and anime. Cartoon normally is about random stories where fun is given the most importance. Sounds are loud, deep color use but for anime its like a movie or drama. Every amime comes with good and interesting stories, musics composed by famous musicians which can alone send us to a different world. Color use is moderate and has more details with the use of lights and shadows. Together all these materials can send anyone into the world of that story which is used for the anime. When watching anime every characters seem to be real and you are bound to forget that you are watching an animation movie/series. Most of the Anime normally use Japanese Manga art which gives an anime a bit more different and unique look. Some characters has such cuteness that no one can resist getting charmed by it. Many people even make their own music video from taking clips from anime and songs by other famous  singers making it more beautiful which is now known as AMV (Anime Music Video)

The musics used in Anime is normally Japanese as it is produced in Japan. The musics are so great that when an anime is dubbed into English for releasing worldwide, they leave the music as it is. Some musics are dubbed but with the same rhythm and translated lyrics.

It is unfortunate that some people still haven’t witnessed the greatness of Anime but throw negative comments on it. Many of them confuse anime with cartoons. For people like this i really advice that they watch a few anime first then comment on it. Japan has already proved that the whole world can be one, sharing a same culture that is Anime Culture. Some people may disagree with it saying we have our own culture. True enough but if a country has such beauty in its culture then what’s wrong sharing it with the rest of the world? We would want to share the beauty of our culture with the rest of the world too am I not correct? So lets all be positive about Anime Culture and share its beauty together.

Extorting Money with Snakes!

One afternoon, I along with a few friends was visiting the Zia Uddan. Quite a few people were seen taking a break from their busy lives and enjoying the weather. All of a sudden, a group of young women with snakes and baskets came out of nowhere asking for money. They were threatening the visitors with their snakes, if they were not given the money. Most of the visitors, being panic-stricken, were forced to pay. This is something that is happening almost everywhere, but the authorities do not seem to do anything about it. I would like to request the authorities to look into this immediately.

Excursion of the Department of Real Estate at DIU plot, Ashulia

On the 8th August 2010, Bachelor of Real Estate (BRE) program of Daffodil International University (DIU) organized an Excursion at DIU site, Ashulia, for the students of first four batches. It was a sunny day in the mid summer. About forty students participated at the tour. The main goal of this study tour was to familiarize the students with the DIU plot of 10 acres, where the authority is going to establish a permanent campus of Daffodil International University. As real estate structures are directly involved in constructing a permanent campus, the tour was really with educative fervour for the students of the Department of Real estate. It is to be mentioned that, DIU is the first university to incorporate the Department of Real Estate with its mainstream of education.

The excursion was successfully ended. Mr. Masud Ibn Rahman, Head of the Department, Mr. Md. Abdul Kafi, Special Asst. to the Chairman, BOG & Mr. Yousuf Iqubal Chowdhury, lecturer, BRE led the team from the front. Mr. Ahemed Shamim Ansary, Administrative Officer of the university, coordinated the tour from beginning till the end.

The whole day program gave the students immense pleasure. They learned many things from the study tour. They were given a questioner to analyze the relevant issues by brainstorming. The students of Department of real Estate passed a jubilant day satiated by educative stuffs. The tour began at around 10 am in the beautiful morning from the DIU main campus and was furled up at around 7 pm in the evening when the two vehicles reached them at DIU campus again. The journey was not very distant and was away from the monotony of life, as the minutely transitory roadside phenomena thrilled them all together.

It is relevant to include that, DIU has purchased ten acres of plain land which is away from the hullabaloo of the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh. The place is not very far and is bridged with good communication. It is a greenish meadow bursting with stunning landscape all around. After the establishment of the campus over there, students will definitely enjoy their study in the midst of that well-developed area.

Offbeat and Appearance

General tips about preparing when you’ve already secured an interview.

  1. Practice. Practice in front of the mirror the night before. Check your facial expressions.
  2. Have your clothes ready. (Reduce your stress.) This includes ironing clothes and buffing shoes.
  3. Dress professionally. Part of being professional is dressing professionally. For men, a tie isn’t always necessary later in life. But wear at least a suit jacket and slacks. Women should dress appropriately. Phone in and ask if necessary. Err on the side of conservative.
  4. Makeover. Don’t spend a fortune, but have clothes you can wear to an interview and the job afterwards. Maybe you need new shoes and a haircut or styling.
  5. Use your judgment. Facial jewelry, colored/ spiky hair, and tattoos are relatively new fashion “accessories” and companies differ in their acceptance. Most look past it nowadays. Being you is best. Call reception and ask for suggestions, if you’re concerned.
  6. Groom yourself. Brush your teeth and shower. Men, eliminate stubble.
  7. Get enough sleep. Don’t go in with bloodshot eyes.

Pre-Interview

On the day of your interview, prep yourself.

  1. Be prepared. Know where you’re supposed to go. Check their Web site, and call in if you have to.
  2. Know why. You’ll likely be asked why you want to work there: it’s small, it’s big, cool research, cool job, highly recommended, whatever.
  3. Arrive early. But not too early. Five to 10 minutes early is okay. If you’re earlier, wait somewhere else first.
  4. Be friendly. Greet the receptionist and anyone that talks to you before the interview. Thank them for any assistance.
  5. Don’t smoke. At least not on the premises. You don’t want to smell of smoke.
  6. Use the restroom beforehand. Better safe than having to go during the interview. Comb your hair, ditch your chewing gum, etc.
  7. Learn your interviewer’s name. If he/she has an unusual name, ask the receptionist for the proper pronunciation.
  8. Turn off your cell phone. And take out any Bluetooth earpiece you might be wearing.

A lot of what gains you points in an interview is your behavior. They already have your resume. They want to know about you.

Interview Opener

  1. Wait for the handshake. The rules of a handshake have changed as more women have entered the workforce. Normally, two men should shake firmly. Beyond that, you’ll have to use your judgement. Don’t crush a person’s hand. Practice with male and female friends.
  2. Keep standing. Don’t sit until you are directed to. There may be other people participating in the interview and it’s best to show that you are “open to direction.”
  3. Make a good first impression and maintain it. Mirroring is a powerful technique if used subtly, no matter the interviewer’s mood.

Interview Dos

  1. Maintain eye contact. Look the interviewer in the eye without staring. Not doing so is often perceived as shiftiness not shyness.
  2. Be succinct. Don’t be a Chatty Cathy; don’t tell your life story. Give a bit of detail instead of just “yes” and “no”.
  3. Nod your head. But don’t over do it. It shows you are attentive and amenable to being managed. Women are more likely to nod than men, so men should practice more.
  4. Ask for clarification. You may be attentive, but if you don’t understand something, politely ask for clarification.
  5. Ask questions. Ask about the culture at the company and any general questions that an interviewer has not mentioned yet.
  6. Be flexible. Even dream jobs have uninteresting tasks that must get done. Don’t wrinkle your nose at a list of tasks. And say you’re willing to learn if you don’t know how to do something.
  7. Ask about your role. You could be interviewed for multiple positions, despite what the job description you applied to indicate. Ask what positions you’re being considered for.
  8. Ask about your team. Ask how many people you’d be working with and what they do. Ask if there’s anyone internally that is applying for the job.
  9. Ask about the last person. Ask why the last person left the position, or if it’s a new one. If the interviewer hesitates, back off. If they answer anyway, they’ll probably respect you for asking.
  10. Ask about future opportunities. Is there room for growth? Asking shows that you’re career-minded, and that you might stay long-term.

Interview Don’ts

  1. Don’t ask about salary benefits first. Let the interviewer bring it up. Typically, this is discussed towards the end, and usually if they’re interested in you.
  2. Don’t fidget. It’s often perceived as a sign of untrustworthiness.
  3. Don’t mumble. Speak clearly and enunciate your words. This should be part of your pre-interview practice with friends.
  4. Don’t be intimidated. Be confident without being arrogant.
  5. Don’t lie in the interview. A skilled interviewer can “read” an applicant.
  6. Don’t show off or overact. Just be yourself, but don’t be overly effusive.
  7. Don’t hit on your interviewer. Seriously, you’re in an interview, not a nightclub.
  8. Don’t complain about someone. Be positive.
  9. Don’t seem needy. Sure, you need a job, but if you act like it, you probably won’t get it.

  1. Remember what it’s about. Think “what’s in it for them”, not just “what’s in it for me”. Both parties have to benefit.
  2. Be prepared to be tested. You might be asked to prove, say, your computer programming skills with a small quiz on basic principles of coding. Interviews for other industries might include similar testing.

Closer and Post Interview

The end of the interview is just as crucial to getting a job, as is what you do afterwards.

  1. Know your availability. An interviewer may ask when you can start. Don’t be afraid to say that you have a vacation scheduled, etc., or that you can start immediately.
  2. Be flexible on salary. When asked what you’re expecting, a good answer for a new grad is that you’re hoping for at least fair entry level wages, with performance bonuses. You might even say that you’re willing to accept stock options, especially at a startup.
  3. Ask for the job. If the interview goes well and you think you want to work there, ask for the job. Say something like, “Well this sounds like a very interesting job and I’d love to work here.” Do this when they offer their handshake goodbye. If they like you, you’ll be asked back for a second interview, or you might get offered the job right there.
  4. Say thank you. Thank the interviewer and the receptionist, etc.
  5. Be patient, part 2. As you’re leaving, ask about the selection process and when you might hear back. If there’s more than one position, you might hear back sooner. You might get more than one interview, but that may require sign-off from someone on vacation.
  6. Follow up on each interview. Experts offer differing opinions on this. If in doubt, call reception and ask their suggestions, especially if you haven’t heard back within two weeks.
  7. Keep an interview log. It’ll help you track the state of each application (sent application, pending interview, interview complete, followed up, rejected, etc.). Include dates.
  8. Keep learning. An advanced degree may help your career, but you can also learn without returning to school. Many large universities are offering their courses free online. Also check the Open Courseware Consortium.
