Speakers at the seminar said that Palm oil is heart friendly and price competitive and provides vitamin A and E that protect us from heart disease and cancer. Considering the price and health benefits they recommended for Palm oil for increased consumption in Bangladesh. They said these at the seminar on “Suitable Edible oil for Bangladesh” held today at the auditorium of Daffodil International University today (May 19, 2012). Department of Nutrition and Food Engineering (NFE) and Department of Public Health of Daffodil International University organized the seminar and Malaysian Palm Oil Council sponsored the seminar.
Mr. Ghulam Muhammed Quader, MP, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Commerce, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present in the seminar as the chief guest. Mr. Md. Sabur Khan, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Daffodil International University was present in the seminar as the special guest and Dr. Aminul Islam, Emeritus Professor, DIU was present as the guest of honor. The seminar was presided over by Prof. Dr. M. Lutfar Rahman, Vice Chancellor, DIU and Keynote paper was presented by Professor Dr. S. M. Keramot Ali, Head, Department of Public Health, DIU.
Professor Dr. S. M. Mahbub Ul Haque Majumder, Dean, Faculty of Science and Information Technology delivered the address of welcome. The technical session was chaired by Emeritus Professor Dr. Aminul Islam and papers were presented by Prof. Dr. K.M. Formuzul Haque,Head, Dept. of NFE, Dr. Shuvogata Chowdhury, Dr. Md. Bellal Hossain, Associate Professor, Department of NFE, Mr. A.K. M. Fokhrul Alam, Country Director, Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC).

Addressing as the chief guest Ghulam Muhammad Qader, MP, said Edible oil is one of the most sensible products to look over with very special attention under the ministry of Commerce. We have to import almost 100% edible oil from foreign country. We are importing 66% of total edible oil as Palm oil and the rest are other edible oil like Soya bin oil, But in the market, 66% of the total edible oil in Bangladeshi market is sold by name of Soya bin oil. That is 30-35% of palm oil is mixing with Soya bin and is being sold in the market by name of Soya Bin Oil by the business man, he alleged.

He also said, Palm oil has some better nutrition value and low cholesterol as well as Price and import cost of Palm oil is reasonable than other edible oil. But palm have no popularity and people think it as it is not suitable for health. He urged the people to come forward to use palm oil and also urged the researchers should come forward to let the people know and aware that Palm oil is better in all respect for our health and also cost effective. We need to aware people about the massive use of palm oil.
While addressing as the special guest Md. Sabur khan said, Food habit is the first condition of food security. We can make our life healthy through maintaining a good food habit. He also stressed on to introduce adequate academic courses on food habit and
Food security in different levels of education.
