Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, Chairman, Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation addressing as the chief guest at the Dementia Caregivers Golden Award handing over ceremony on World Alzheimer’s Month organized by Department of Public Health of Daffodil International University (DIU) and Alzheimer Society of Bangladesh (ASB).

 

Department of Public Health of Daffodil International University (DIU) and Alzheimer Society of Bangladesh (ASB) jointly observed World Alzheimer’s Month based on the theme “Everz 3 Seconds, someone in the world develops dementia”  today on September 22, 2018 at 71 Milonayoton of Daffodil International University.
Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, Chairman, Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation adorned the chair as the chief guest while Mst. Selina Jahan Lita, MP and Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Talukder, Syed Mizanur Rahman, Director Student Affairs of Daffodil International University were present as the special guests. Presided over by Professor Dr. Ahmed Ismail Mustafa, Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences of Daffodil International University, the program was also addressed by Professor Dr. A K M Nurunnabi,Population Sciences Department , University of Dhaka, Rtn. M Khairul Alam, District Governor, Rotary International District-3281, Bangladesh. Md. Azizul Haque, Secretary General, Alzheimer Society of Bangladesh (ASB), Rtn. Sejan Khan, Chairman,Dementia Rotary Bangladesh,  Professor Dr. Harun Or Rashid, Head, Department of Public Health, DIU, Rtn. Rosy Sultana, President, Rotary Club of Rose Vallly, Rtn. Md. Mahamudur Rahman, President, Rotary Club of Dhaka.Rtn Affan Ahmed Siddiqui, President, Rotary Club of Buriganga.Dr. Moshiur Rahman, Assistant Professor of Department of GeneticEngineering & Bio Technology of Jessore University of Science and Technology presented keynote presentation on Dementia and highlighted the role of the society to prevent dementia.

This is for the first time in the history of Bangladesh that Dementia Caregivers Golden Award were handed over  to Saifuddin Ahmed, Taslima Kabir, Professor Shahin Ahmed, Dr. Nazifa Isdlam and Advocate Abdul Malek.

Addressing as the chief guest Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, Chairman, Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation said, in the decade of 1970, it was very rare to find out a diabetic patient as people were not aware about it or were not familiar with the syndrome of the disease. Similarly now a day’s most of our people don’t know about dementia.  So, from now we will have to create awareness on dementia among mass people. He also said that at least 7% of total population of Bangladesh is belongs to old age. Dementia patient is dangerously increasing in this elder society. So we should increase awareness about dementia from right now.
Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed also said that a few number of organization is doing work to create awareness about dementia in urban area but the scenario of rural area is totally different. Most of the rural people do not know about dementia. To overcome this situation, government and non-government organizations should come forward, with adequate program, he added.
Addressing as special guest Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder said that dementia is a silent killer and dangerous disease. But, proper awareness and precaution can help remove this disease.  Most of the people are not concerned about this disease. Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder urged our medical colleges and health institutions to come forward to build specialized doctor and nurse for dementia patient.

While addressing as special guest Dr. A.K.M Nurun Nabi, Professor, Department of Population Science, University of Dhaka stressed that awareness should be increased about dementia among all walks of people of the society. This kind of word, we have heard from two or three years ago, but we have no manifestos that how to possible create awareness. To make regulations on dementia, firstly government should come forward with massive program.
Dr. A.K.M Nurun Nabi also urged to build dementia center like old home. In Europe and America, they have lots of dementia center. So, we should follow them to establish dementia center.
Dementia is a chronic, neurodegenerative syndrome that progressively deteriorates an individual’s cognitive, physical, and neurobehavioral functioning. In rural Bangladesh above 48% of people above 60+ years have been suffering from at least one symptom of dementia. Dementia is a progressive disease; patients often require increasingly greater amounts of assistance and supervision over time.

Dementia Family caregivers provide the majority of support with dementia at home. Experiencing these stressors over time; family with dementia could have a detrimental quality of their lives.
