The Department of English of Daffodil International University organized a quiz competition and round table discussion on “Tertiary Education in Bangladesh: Prospects and Challenges” under The Daily Star reading project on 10 December 2018 at 11:00 am in the Banquet Hall of DT. The Editor of The Daily Star Mr. Mahfuz Anam attended the program as the Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Yousuf Mahbubul Islam, Vice Chancellor of DIU, moderated the round table discussion. Professor AMM Hamidur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Mr. Md. Rakibul Hasan Khan, Head of the Department of English, were present in the occasion along with a good number of teachers and students from the Department of English. In the first round of the session, previously registered students took part in a quiz competition based on various news items from The Daily Star. Then the round table discussion started where students formed various groups and discussed on the given topic. A group of selected students sat with Mr. Anam and shared their views regarding the prospects and challenges of tertiary education in Bangladesh. Most of the students emphasized on the fact that producing skilled people for competitive job markets should be the main objective of tertiary education in Bangladesh.

Mr. Mahfuz Anam delivered a speech on the topic and encouraged students to make the best use of their time. He asked the students to have faith in their ability and a positive mindset to overcome any obstacle. He also emphasized on the importance of being realistic in making future plans. The program came to an end with the distribution of prizes. It is to be noted here that the program was organized under The Daily Star reading project, that is, subscription of five hundred copies of the newspaper in five days a week for the students of the Department of English.
