Law Commission Chairman Prof. M. Shah Alam said, Poverty is the main constraint in protecting Human Rights. Reminding the students having a special responsibility he urged to come forward and play active role to fight for and implement human rights in every sector of the society. He also urged the students to keep active role in fight against discrimination.He was addressing as the chief guest at the seminar to mark the “World Human Rights Day-2010” jointly organized by UN Information Centre in Dhaka and Daffodil International University.
Presided over by Prof. Dr. Aminul Islam, Vice Chancellor, Daffodil International University the function was also addressed among others by Mr. Kazi Ali Reza, Officer-in-Charge, UNIC, Dhaka, Professor M. Shahjahan Mina, Advisor, DIU, Prof. Dr. Lutfar Rahman, Dean, FSIT, DIU
While addressing as the Guest of Honour Mr. Arthur Erken, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh said, “human rights are closely interlinked with peace, development and democracy. They are inalienable and indivisible. No country or government can take them or suspend them on their own will. He stressed that we should put our best efforts to ensure all human rights for all, through our actions and not only by lip service.
In his speech Professor Aminul Islam said, In a time when we face challenges such as nuclear proliferation, climate change, transnational terrorism, food security risks, and pandemic disease, we must work as one to build a world we want to see in the 21st century. He addressed the importance of learning the human rights laws and our duties and added that we should reflect those in our life.
The theme of this year’s observance is “Speak up, Stop Discrimination”. UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon’s message on Human Rights Day-2010 was read out by Mr. Moniruzzaman, Reference Officer, UNIC, Dhaka.
In the Poetry session country’s renowned poets Asad Chowdhury, Shihab Sarkar and Muhammad Samad took part with their famous poems related to human rights.
At the end of the program, a short drama on Human Rights titled We Sing of Equality was performed by the DIU students.
